OK, so she does sit to poop, but refuses to do so for #1. Kaja is our 2nd cat, and we got her at 3mo old. She is now 2 yrs old, and has always done this - backing up againt the side of the box and spraying. It really smells, no matter how often we clean the box.
We've trained her to sit in order to get something to eat, but it doesn't work when she uses the box.
It seems to have gotten worse lately, maybe with the summer heat.
Any suggestions on breaking her of this habit?!?
Thanks!

Re: Help! Cat refuses to sit when doing business
Mon, August 7, 2006 - 7:41 AMI would start with a covered cat box. I'm not sure how to address this problem altogether but a covered cat box will keep most of the spray inside.
Have you tried different cat litters. It could be that the cat doesn't like the way the cat litter feels on her feet or the smell of it. There are many different kinds. I use Tidy Cat but I am preparing to switch to World's Greatest Cat Litter. One of my buddies uses some kind of natural material. I have dropped her an email to ask what and I'll come back and post it when I find out.
Another option might be two cat boxes. Many cats do NOT like to share a cat box. In some households you have to have one box per cat. -

Re: Help! Cat refuses to sit when doing business
Tue, August 8, 2006 - 11:20 AMdefinitely try a new litter and multiple boxes. I have two cats and 4 boxes! they are all in different rooms of the house because one of my cats will try and block them from the other cat. Bonnie kept peeing on our couch (finally got rid of it) and the dog's bed (she actually peed on the dog once). I tried Feline Pine, Swheat Scoop, and World's Best Litter. None of them helped. I finally switched to non-clumping clay litter and got another box ( I had 3 at the time), it definitely helped.
